HSE First Aid Training Guidelines For Companies

If you’re unsure of your obligations, the HSE provides a useful guideline to help you identify your company’s First Aid needs:

Environment Employees Need
Low Risk Environments
Office workers, shops etc
Fewer than 50 At least 1 appointed person (1 day course)
50-100 At least 1 First Aider 4 day course
More than 100 1 additional First Aider for every 100
Medium Risk Environments
Light engineering and assembly work, warehousing etc
Fewer than 20 At least 1 appointed person (1 day course)
20-100 At least 1 First Aider 4 day course for every 50 people
More than 100 1 additional First Aider for every 100
High Risk Environments
Construction, Chemical
Fewer than 5 At least 1 appointed person (1 day course)
5-50 At least 1 First Aider 4 day course
More than 50 1 additional First Aider for every 50

Please note that these guidelines apply to each work shift. You must also be aware that:

  • All people working with children must complete a paediatric course
  • All electricians must complete a First Aid course for the trade
  • All door staff must be qualified First Aiders
